Mominul Haque, the left-handed batsman, hit his fourth Test century on the fourth day of the third Test to help Bangladesh set Zimbabwe a world record 449-run target for victory at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Saturday (November 14).
Mominul remained unbeaten on 131 as Bangladesh, seeking a 3-0 washout after winning the first two Tests, posted 319 for 5 in its second innings before declaring.
Zimbabwe was 71 for 1 at stumps, still needing 378 runs with nine wickets in hand to record an improbable win.
The highest fourth-innings total so far that won a Test is 418 for 7 by West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2003.
Sikandar Raza, the opener, was 43 not out and Hamilton Masakadza was unbeaten on 26, the pair having put on 67 for the second wicket after Brian Chari was trapped leg-before by Rubel Hossain without scoring a run.
Mominul, playing only his 12th Test, hit 13 fours in his 189-ball knock and added 113 for the second wicket with Tamim Iqbal, who missed becoming the first Bangladesh batsman to score centuries in both innings of a Test when he was bowled by Natsai M’shangwe for 65.
Tamim scored 109 in the first innings.
Mohammad Mahmuddulah hit 30 off 28 balls, and Mushfiqur Rahim, the captain, added a breezy 46 off 30 balls as Bangladesh prepared to declare.
The Test series will be followed by five One-Day internationals starting on Friday.
