Preview : M30 - KKR vs CSK
Revenge on KKR’s mind when they host CSK
Mumbai 29 April 2015
What
Less than 48 hours since their meeting in Chennai, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings faceoff yet again. KKR will see this as an opportunity to settle scores after CSK snatched victory from their grip in the previous clash in Chennai.
CSK have six wins from seven outings, while KKR have seven points from as many matches (courtesy six points from the three wins and one point from the washout).
When
30 April 2015, 8p.m. IST
Where
Eden Gardens, Kolkata
The Protagonists
Over the years, Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir have been the pillars of KKR’s success. This year too both batsmen have scored runs, but they are yet to click as a pair. In six innings so far, KKR have realised only one half-century partnership from their opening pair. On the bowling front, how much damage the CSK batsmen cause in Brad Hogg’s four overs could decide which way the match swings.
It is said statistics are a reflection of the state of affairs. In CSK’s case, the numbers reveal the story very clearly; the openers, Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith, are the team’s top two run-getters this season. They have not only individually scored runs at a good pace, but have also generally given the team off to explosive starts using aggressive means at both ends. On the bowling front, CSK will be forced to make a change to their playing XI for the first time this season following the finger injury to R Ashwin. How CSK make up for the absence of their premier spin bowler – who was just starting to discover his rhythm this season – will also have a significant influence on the match.
Contests to look-forward to
KKR’s Brad Hogg kept the CSK batsmen on tenterhooks when these two teams met in Chennai earlier this season. The seven deliveries the 44-year old bowled to Suresh Raina made for gripping television; if the pair come together again, it will be interesting to see the CSK left-hander’s approach against the KKR chinaman bowler.
Previous Meetings
Chennai Super Kings have a fairly strong hold over the Kolkata Knight Riders if one looks at the historical contests between the two teams. CSK have won 10 of the 15 matches between the two sides.
When these two teams met in Chennai earlier this season, KKR were in a position of strength at 52 for 1 after five overs in their chase of 135. The introduction of the off-spinner R Ashwin in the sixth over turned the match on its head; he dismissed Robin Uthappa with his first delivery and then accounted for Manish Pandey with the first delivery of his following over to derail the run-chase. Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina then tightened the noose on the KKR middle order, and despite Ryan ten Doeschate’s late overs hitting, CSK prevailed by two runs.
Trivia
5 of CSK’s 6 wins this season have been when they’ve batted first, while all three of KKR’s wins this season have been in run-chases.
8 of the last 10 IPL matches at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata have been won by the team chasing.
This match will feature the two most experienced captains in T20 cricket; MS Dhoni has been captain in 192 T20 matches, while Gautam Gambhir has been captain in 112 T20s.
In the first five matches of Pepsi IPL 2015, the CSK spinners only picked up four wickets, conceding runs at an economy rate of 9.20. In the following two matches, they have picked up seven wickets at an incredible economy rate of 4.00.
What Next
Both KKR and CSK will be seen in action next on May 2. KKR head to Bengaluru next for their away contest against Royal Challengers Bangalore, while Chennai Super Kings head to Hyderabad for their away fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
