Left-arm spinner becomes first to take hat-trick on ODI debut as home side wins 5-0
Taijul Islam became the first bowler in One-Day International history to claim a hat-trick on debut as Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe by five wickets.
Taijul Islam became the first bowler in One-Day International history to claim a hat-trick on debut as Bangladesh overcame a few hiccups to beat Zimbabwe by five wickets in the final game in Mirpur on Monday (December 1). Victory sealed a 5-0 result for Bangladesh, to go with the 3-0 sweep it had achieved in the preceding Test series.
Taijul, the left-arm spinner, had incredible figures of 4 for 11 off seven overs as Zimbabwe, who opted to bat at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, mustered only 128 in 30 overs, with just two batsmen getting into double figures. Bangladesh then overcame hurdles of its own on the way to 130 for 5 in 24.3 overs, courtesy Mahmudullah's unbeaten 51.
What appeared to be a straightforward chase was made bumpy by Tendai Chatara, the medium pacer, who rattled Bangladesh's batting with the strikes of Anamul Haque (8), Soumya Sarkar (20) and Mushfiqur Rahim (11). At 93 for 5, Zimbabwe was in with a chance. But those hopes were extinguished by Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman (13), who finished the task with an unbeaten sixth-wicket stand of 37.
Zimbabwe, who managed to cross 200 just once in the previous four ODIs, looked good to post a competitive total as Hamilton Masakadza (52) and Vusi Sibanda (37) added 79 for the second wicket. Masakadza scored at a brisk clip, hitting five fours and three sixes in his 56-ball knock, before Jubair Hossain foxed him with the googly.
The onus once again fell on Brendan Taylor, the captain, to steer the team to safety. But his dismissal for 9 brought about a complete breakdown. Zimbabwe lost its final eight wickets for just 20 runs. The pace of events was such, that Elton Chigumbura, who walked in at No. 7, could face all of three deliveries even as the lower order imploded.
Tajiul, who has 25 wickets from five Tests, took his hat-trick in the 28th over of the innings. Tinashe Panyangara was the first to go as he was deceived by a delivery that spun across the face of his bat to hit the stumps. John Nyumbu played across the line to a quicker one to be adjudged lbw. The moment of glory came when Chatara went for a wild heave, only to find his stumps disturbed.
